WonderSchlong Memorial
Marvin Interment Ceremony

On Saturday, July 1st, we will be celebrating the life of WonderSchlong (Marvin Errickson). He hashed for about 25 years and usually left a unique impression on anyone he would strike up a conversation with him. He was best known for being a free spirit, the incorrigible hippie sporting long hair, who would sometimes be referenced as the homeless attorney by those hashers unfortunate enough to have encounters with the police after too many down-downs. Others knew him for his running wardrobe (or lack thereof). His favorite trails were those where he could run "au naturel" - The Bezerk and the Black's Beach runs.. This memorial run will feature his favorite Black's beach run, down his favorite trail, the "Ho Chi Minh" trail.

For those interested, WonderSchlong's Obituary can be viewed here. In addition, since his passing, pictures of him hashing/running and skiing have been collected and can be viewed at the following URLs:

Provided below is a copy of the WonderSchlong Memorial Run listing as posted on SDH3, with all references to links being active (You can't post active links when you post runstarts).

Dog friendly: Other (specified in Notes)
Notes:
This trail is being laid in memory of Wonderschlong who passed away in March. Wonder's favorite location to run in San Diego was Black's Beach (Would you have guessed?) and you too can run "au naturel" just like he always loved to...

Trail offers multiple splits (Walker, Turkey and Eagle). Walker about 3 miles, Turkey about 4.5 miles, Eagle about 6 miles. Trail Shoes Recommended. Dogs not permitted on Black's beach so if you are running with a dog, you will need to stick to the Walker trail. For more details, click on the Run Name link "Wonderschlong Memorial Run" beneath the kennel name/date heading.

"B" is at 10948 Torreyana Rd, San Diego, (https://goo.gl/maps/WKp7ANVuX6KSJ3au7)

The Trails

Trail Shoes are recommended for all trails.

Turkeys & Eagles:

There are not dedicated Turkey and Eagle Trails on this run.. There are multiple T/E splits; Your experience will be based upon the trail options you choose at each split. There is ONE split for walkers. After its encounter, ALL trail choices you make will resulting in your descent to Black's Beach. Please note that dogs are NOT permitted on Black's Beach, so make sure to take the "Walker" option if you are running with your dogs.. If you take the "Turkey" trail option at all of the T/E splits, you will end up running about 4.5 miles, If you choose the "Eagle" trail at each of the T/E splits, you will end up running about 6 miles.

Note: one of the T/E splits corresponds to where one chooses whether to take the paved route down to the beach, versus taking the "Ho Chi Minh" trail (Eagle Option). Wonder's favorite trail was the "Ho Chi Minh" trail. This split can be recognized as being the first beer check you will encounter.

Check out this web site for more info on the "Ho Chi Minh/Siagon" trail if you are unfamiliar with it:

    ----------

Walkers:

The Walker Trail is a little about 3 miles (walk out and come back if you wish to walk less distance). It does NOT go to Black's Beach and should be run by anyone running with a dog. Walkers should follow the "Pack" at the start... and should take the Turkey option at any T/E splits encountered. There will be a Walker "Split" in the Woods on UCSD grounds (about 1.5 miles into the run), which takes you back to start via a dedicated Walker trail. The trail will lead you back to North Torrey Pines Rd across from the Gliderport.. Follow the GliderPort signs (you will be going backwards on the trail you took out from the Gliderport).
===========================
In honor of Wonder, considered running with his favorite drinking vessel, a water bottle which he always filled with beer.. Please come prepared to tell us about your most memorable encounters with him. Some of Wonder's renown attire will be on display to bring back memories... as well as photos taken during the many years he hashed. His daughter's will also be participating in the hash (yes he had kids), whose resemblance you will definitely notice..

As a toast to him, we plan on serving Fig Newtons, and a taste of food from the annual event that he helped run for many years (The Norwegian Run).
