Kind of Annual Springtime Desert Campout
Hare(s): Dr.Dive, Burnt Tatas, maybe Flabio and Mas Penis
Location: Arroyo Salado Primitive Campground, County Highway S22, Borrego Springs, CA 92004
Directions: Find your way to the town of Ranchita, CA. It is about 10 miles NNE of Julian as the crow flies. This is the quickest route and will save you time driving lots of winding roads. From Ranchita follow county highway S22 east to Borrego Springs and take a right at Palm Canyon Dr. At the big round-about in the middle of Borrego Springs continue east on Palm Canyon Dr. Palm Canyon Dr will bend left onto Pegleg Rd, then right onto Borrego-Salton Seaway. You will still be following county hwy S22. Go nine miles and look out for the tiny brown sign on the right with a picture of a tent that says “Arroyo Salado Camp”. It is after mile 34, but just before mile 35. The road to camp is car friendly and not more than half a mile from the highway. Follow marks to camp, do not drive into sand. See link above for Google map.
Run Fee: $0, just bring everything you need, tent, shade popup, booze, plenty of water, food, booze etc. No need to bring firewood, hares have enough.
Trail type: (not specified)
Dog friendly: (not specified)
Notes:
Sandy washes, stony pavements, desolate hills, spring wildflowers, slot canyons, dry waterfalls, wind caves. Probably a 4WD trip to Pumpkin Patch and other sights.
Hares will arrive on Friday. Show up Friday or Saturday morning, camp all weekend. For those interested, bring along some yummy beers for a Saturday evening "beer potluck".
*UPDATE* Forgot to mention the camp site has pit toilets. Toilet paper is always handy though. Temps will be 90 in the day, 60 at night, so be prepared. Dive is cooking Moroccan beef tagine for Saturday night, and other snacks throughout the weekend. Dogfish is cooking up something Friday night. Feel free to compliment the "Saharan" cuisine. Don't worry, someone will have a camp stove handy if you don't have one.
